What happens in a typical lesson?

Each lesson starts with a gentle rotation of the limbs, followed by an appropriate level of aerobic exercise.

Training broadly consists of learning and practicing preset techniques of attack and defence. After a period of time, these techniques translate into a more free and reactive system of self defence. So in a typical lesson, we spend time on:

  • Techniques (mental and physical focus, maximising power)
  • Drill-work (copycat learning of techniques)
  • Patterns (applying techniques in a logical sequence)
  • Set sparring (applying defensive techniques to a preset attack)
  • Free sparring (timed contests applying techniques of attack and defence according to the rules of the sport)
  • Wrist holds and releases (evasive action for close contact)
